Zimbabwe ended a 31-year drought against Australia in one-day cricket with a stunning three-wicket win in Harare on Sunday.

Chasing 210 to win after impressively restricting Australia, the hosts stormed to 100-2 before a middle-order collapse threatened to ruin their moment. Captain Elton Chigumbura (52 not out) and all-rounder Prosper Utseya (30 not out) added an unbeaten 55 runs for the eighth wicket, though, as Zimbabwe completed their run chase with two overs remaining.

Australia's Nathan Lyon took 4-44 off 10 overs but struggled for support on a pitch that offered great assistance to the spinners.

Zimbabwe beat Australia by 13 runs when the sides first met in the 50-over format, in 1983, but lost the next 28 completed matches to their more-fancied opponents. That run looked like continuing when they fell to 156-7, but Chigumbura and Utseya held firm to be the heroes for Zimbabwe.

Earlier, Australia struggled with the bat as Sean Williams (2-21 off 10 overs) and Utseya (2-45 off 10) impressed for the home team. Captain Michael Clarke - who will return to Australia to seek treatment on an injured hamstring - was the glue that held the innings together before retiring hurt on 68.

Chigumbura hit four fours in a measured 68-ball knock, while Utseya was more aggressive, highlighted by his match-winning six over mid-wicket off Starc that sealed Zimbabwe's famous win.

Australia and Zimbabwe have faced each other in 33 ODIs, with the former winning on 29 occasions. Zimbabwe had won the first meeting between the sides back in 1983.
